BATTLE OF GALLIPOLI

February 19, 1915 - January 9, 1916

In a battle that lasted almost a year, the Battle of Gallipoli resulted in a significant number of losses to both sides in the war.  The Allied forces had to push for this battle after the Ottoman Empire joined sides with Germany, limiting their connection to Russian forces via the Mediterranean.  A failed attempt to take over Istanbul from the sea meant that the allied forces would have to work by land at the Gallipoli peninsula.  This was the first battle that Australia and New Zealand assisted in, but they never made it more than a few 100 meters in from the beaches.  This resulted in cramped and poor-quality trenches for this long-lasting battle, and as the number of casualties continued to grow from the artillery shells and snipers the smell, health, and other conditions in the trenches grew worse.  The Allied front line had very limited room so latrines, water supply, and other necessities also struggled to function the way they were intended to.  The Allies finally decided to end the battle and redirect their forces, because Turkish machine guns and reinforcements continued to defeat any Allied offenses.  The trenches in this battle were some of the worst land and internal conditions of the War, and the results were far from what was hoped for.
